Be it ordained by the Malden City Council that the Code of the City of Malden (MCC) is hereby amended by adding 2.12.200 VETERANS’ SERVICE COORDINATOR to include the following:

2.12.200 VETERANS’ SERVICE COORDINATOR
A. The Mayor shall appoint a Veterans’ Service Coordinator who shall serve as Veterans’ Services Agent for a term of up to 3 years and shall be eligible for reappointment as set forth in M.G.L. c. 115 s. 3. The Veterans’ Service Coordinator shall report to the Director of Health and Human Services. The Coordinator shall be a resource to Malden Veterans and their families to help them transition to civilian life by assisting them in understanding and accessing programs, services and benefits available from the City, the Commonwealth, the Federal Government and veterans’ organizations.
B. The Veterans’ Service Coordinator may apply for grants and awards from state and federal agencies, may seek funding from private organizations and may engage in private fundraising, provided that all funds acquired be deposited in the City Treasury and expended as allowed by law. Private fundraising by independent veterans’ organizations shall not be required to be deposited into the City Treasury.
C. The Veterans’ Service Coordinator, for the purpose of providing programs for veterans and their families, may act in conjunction with similar agencies, both private and public and may, subject to funding, enter into agreements with such agencies for the provision of services.
D. The Veterans’ Service Coordinator shall oversee the dignified care and new installation of monuments honoring veterans and their families and co-ordinate events that honor veterans.
E. The Veterans’ Service Coordinator shall review and make determinations related to applications related to city-provided benefits to ensure the eligibility of the applicants and maintain city records related to veterans and veterans’ services, according to the provisions of M.G.L. c.115.
Be it further ordained that 2.08.040 ENUMERATION OF BOARDS AND COMMISSION APPOINTED OFFICERS; TERMS AND DUTIES is amended by striking ‘Veterans’ Services Commissioner’ and replacing with ‘Veterans’ Services Coordinator’.
