Resolve: That the Malden City Council recognize and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month began as a commemorative week in 1968 to recognize the contributions of the Hispanics, Latino or Latinx community during the civil rights movement and;
WHEREAS, in 1988 it was expanded to a month. Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th, a historically significant day that marks the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua and soon after, Mexico, on September 16th, Chile on September 18th and Belize on September 21st and;
WHEREAS, Hispanic progress is American progress. Latinos are the growth and the economic power of the U.S. with more than 62 million people and with 1.9 trillion dollars in purchasing power and;
WHEREAS, each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean and Central and South America; and;
WHEREAS, Latino’s are a large group of hard-working, passionate and full-of-values individuals who have contributed and continue to contribute to American society and in our city of Malden culture, economy and overall progress.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the City Council hereby recognize in Malden and celebrate September 15th through October 15th as Hispanic Heritage Month.
