Title

Order:  That the Malden City Council establish “The Malden Youth Council” special subcommittee of the Community Engagement and Inclusion Committee.

Body

The Malden Youth Council (MYC) seeks to uplift youth voices and increase youth civic engagement. The MYC will work collaboratively with other Malden Youth Groups, Schools, and Elected Officials. The MYC will seek to provide information and help without adding additional work to staff.

The purpose of the MYC is to:

1.                     Work in collaboration with local government by providing input and ideas on important matters under consideration by the City Council and informing the City Council of their challenges in government.

2.                     Bring youth issues of importance to the attention of the City Council and community at large. The City Council may seek the help of the MYC to gather input from youth.

3.                     Actively engage in city government by being a liaison to selected Boards and Commissions. This would be a mutual agreement between the MYC and the selected Board or Commission Chair.

4.                     Implement projects that will benefit the community at large.

The Malden Youth Council shall consist of twelve (12) members who are residents of Malden, making the best effort to represent one (1) member from each ward and one (1) member representing each High School in Malden (Malden High School, Mystic Valley Regional Charter School, Malden Catholic, and the Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational School). After the Community Engagement and Inclusion Committee (CEIC) chooses the 12 appointments they would be put forth to the full City Council to be confirmed as members of the MYC. MYC members will serve for a minimum of 1 year and will elect who will serve as their Chair. The MYC will report to the CEIC.

To be considered, students must be 14 -19 years old and be a student in one of the High Schools or homeschooled in Malden. Students will complete an application online which will be reviewed by the members of the CEIC and two (2) youth members who will interview the final candidates.
